life’s been good…. coulda been better, coulda been worse. heat = pure torture though…
and yeah. it’s halfway through this summer program….. YAYYYYYYYY!!!
we’ll be on satellite teams for 2 weeks. that means the group of 20 will be split into 3 teams. hopefully time flies. just 2 weeks after satellites then it’s time to pump it up!!! =)
soooooooo… COUNTING DOWN!!!
just 20 more work days <3
A man sat at a metro station in Washington DC and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning.
He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, it was calculated that thousands of people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.Three minutes went by and a middle aged man noticed there was musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried up to meet his schedule.
A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the till and without stopping continued to walk.
A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly he was late for work.
The one who paid the most attention was a 3 year old boy. His mother tagged him along, hurried but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk turning his head all the time. Every single time a child walked past, he or she tried to stop and watch. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.
In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk their normal pace.
He collected $32.
When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it.
No one applauded, nor was there any recognition. No one knew this but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written with a violin worth 3.5 million dollars.
Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in Boston and the seats average $100.
Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of an social experiment about perception, taste and priorities of people. The outlines were: in a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour: Do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize the talent in an unexpected context?
One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be:
If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing?
I think I’ve reblogged this twice now. Even as I think about it I still miss daily beauty.
This has to be one of my favorite articles of all time. I read it when it was published and think about it almost every week. It’s sheer genius.

I AM BACK FOR A SMASHIN WEEKEND!!!
Yay! I am back for the weekend! I have waited so long for this…
Sooooooooooooooooooooo…. fun/adventures…… here I come!!!!!!!! =)
Weekly blog. =)
I have never been so excited for Thursdays. During the school year, I dread Thursdays. It’s a day packed with labs, TA-ing, club meetings, officers meetings, etc… It’s one of the most tiring days of the week. But here during this 10-week summer program, currently in San Diego, Thursdays are what we call ‘colporteur Fridays.’
Basically, we work Sunday through Thursday. Thursday = last day of the work week!!! =) Makes me so happy. hahaha. I know, it sounds like it’s not a big deal, but it really is for me. You don’t know how tiring going door-to-door is asking for donations until you actually do it. Some people are really nice and help you out, but others are mean to the core. Don’t get me wrong, they may be really nice people having a bad day, but it’s just discouraging to walk up to a door, not even ring the doorbell and the people yelling out “no thanks, good-bye” then shuts the door in your face. Yeah, it’s tough. But when you meet nice people, all troubles fade =)
Guess what. One more week working in San Diego. Then a weekend off. I’ll be around Loma Linda area, so if you’re around, hit me up. I really want to go out and eat MEAT! Sushi, Korean BBQ…. yeah, that’s what I dream off. Even KFC or El Pollo Loco. It’s vegetarian here. The food’s not bad, I just miss my MEAT [you know what I mean, especially Willy. lol] But yeah, AYCE. I imagine/dream/think about meat when I lay down at night, trying to sleep. To the point where I can almost smell/taste it, and start salivating. No kidding. Yeah, that’s how bad it is.
I’m an internet addict. Fact admitted and accepted. Today, it’s all about technology. I can’t live without internet, cell phones, or even my ipod. I mean, if I get dropped off in the middle of a deserted island without those things, I’ll probably survive… physically. hahaha. But yeah, getting internet once a week is really hard. Miss facebook-ing and msn the most. >_<
Well, this blog’s long enough. Keep following me for weekly updates I guess. and find me on facebook =)
Summer "adventures"
So, I’m down here in San Diego. Working. Instead of playing… yeah………..
LSU peeps. Sorry I had to miss most of grad. Had to rush down to SD so I can be “on time” for work. *sigh*. But yeah, I guess life’s good….. I’m just really tired. I really wanna fast forward time to Aug. 14 (when I’m done working), just wish I had a universal remote as seen in the movie “click.”
Just in case you’re wondering or don’t know, I’m here in SD working my behind off… selling books door-to-door… colporteuring. Yeah, it’s really intense……. Some say it’s “really rewarding but intense.” Right now, I truly understand the meaning of “intense.” I guess I’m still learning to appreciate the little things that come my way… and feel that this is a rewarding experience.
Actually, now that I think about it, I have grown remarkably in the last few days that I’ve been here. I’ve learned to be REALLY persistent.
uh, gtg. post l8er
